Alaina is a SLC13A5 Superhero. Here are a few fun facts Alaina’s mom shared with us!
- Age: 10
- Hometown: Florida
- Alaina loves dogs and immediately laughs when they come near her.
- Alaina loves her 2 older brothers so much! She watches them and laughs and smiles whenever they are around.
- Alaina sings with her Poppy! When my Dad (her Poppy) sings to her, she makes her own sounds to join him! It’s precious ❤️
Alaina’s Medical Journey
We want to share a bit more about our August Superhero Alaina. Alaina is one tough kiddo. Like other kids with SLC13A5 Epilepsy, Alaina began having seizures shortly after birth. Alaina’s mom reports that she was literally having a seizure a minute every hour of the day(!!). At times both Alaina and her brother Brayden (who also has SLC13A5 Epilepsy) were in the hospital at the same time struggling with seizures. Alaina had brain surgery (called a craniotomy) when she was 4 years old to try to reduce her seizures. Today, 6 years after her surgery, Alaina is wheelchair-bound and fed by a tube, but her seizure control has improved. Her smile lights up a room and her family could not be more proud of her strength and resilience.
